Usually things they tinker with don't do that. However we are mutants and strange things are attracted to us. But I believe Clint said it best, there are measures installed  to protect everyone. Sometimes idiots get through.

Seems to me it has less to do with being mutants and more to do with being dumbasses who play with things they little understand.
